Hopes joint NBN Co–Amazon satellite internet will transform remote connectivity

Australia is set to get another satellite internet provider in 2026, giving SpaceX's Starlink some long-awaited competition. Government-owned NBN Co has partnered with Amazon to roll out high-speed broadband using 3,200 low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites from Amazon's Project Kuiper. Starlink already has about 7,000 operational satellites providing internet to remote parts of the country. With Amazon entering the game, there will soon be more than 10,000 LEO satellites focused on delivering high-speed internet — and that is not counting all the other satellites in orbit. The new service is expected to launch in 2026, and NBN Co says it will offer a major upgrade in speed and reliability for people currently using its satellite network. Since Sky Muster launched in 2015, ongoing issues with its reliability and performance prompted many internet users to switch to Starlink, which quickly became a popular provider thanks to its LEO satellites. The transition from Sky Muster to LEO satellites has sparked hopes that a bit of competition might finally benefit regional users. NBN Co's chief development officer for regional and remote services, Gavin Williams, said the partnership would benefit new and existing customers. He said the new venture with Amazon would replace NBN's Sky Muster, which is currently just two satellites 36,000 kilometres into space. "The Kuiper constellation will be 3,200 satellites, so a lot more satellites, and in round numbers will be around 600 kilometres from Earth," he said. Mr Williams said this would greatly increase the speed of the internet for up to 300,000 customers. "If your home-based classroom's offline, you can't just pop the kids down to school. "If your online shop doesn't work, you can't just pop down to Woolies down the street. "It's literally and figuratively a lifeline for customers in remote WA." For remote areas, such as the Shire of Yalgoo, CEO Ian Holland said satellite technology was important for emergency services. "A lot of our area historically hasn't been covered by anything other than a really slow-to-connect sat [satellite] phone," Mr Holland said. "We've had some investment for Starlink units for our fire trucks, and I know that other emergency services such as WA Police and St John have been rolling out LEO equipment as well. Mr Holland said that while competition between companies would be a win for consumers, the night sky was already getting crowded with satellites. Staying connected wherever we are comes at a cost. "From a night sky perspective, we can already look up and see the trails of these objects flying through," Mr Holland said. "I think that's the reality of where technology is going within this space."

Gavin Williams loses no-hit bid with 1 out in 9th, but Guardians still finish off sweep of Mets

Gavin Williams came within two outs of Cleveland's first no-hitter in 44 years before Juan Soto homered with one out in the ninth inning, and the Guardians completed a three-game sweep of the reeling New York Mets with a 4-1 win Wednesday. Williams (7-4) walked three and struck out six, including Francisco Lindor to lead off the ninth. But Soto homered just beyond the leaping grasp of center fielder Angel Martinez two pitches later. The Guardians have not thrown a no-hitter since Len Barker twirled a perfect game on May 15, 1981. Their no-hitter drought is the longest in the majors. Williams, who was the first player on the field in the ninth with nobody warming up in the Guardians' bullpen, retired Pete Alonso on a fly to right but exited after walking Brandon Nimmo for the third time. The right-hander threw 126 pitches -- 17 more than his previous career high and the the most in the majors since Alex Cobb threw 131 in a one-hitter for the San Francisco Giants on Aug. 29, 2023. Hunter Gaddis got Mark Vientos to fly out to earn his second save. David Fry led off the second by homering against David Peterson (7-5). Angel Martinez hit a two-run homer in the third and Gabriel Arias added an RBI triple in the sixth. The Mets have lost eight of nine. Soto's homer allowed the Mets to avoid being no-hit for the ninth time in team history. The Guardians' no-hitter drought is at 7,115 games, counting the postseason. The Mets hit the road Friday, when RHP Kodai Senga (7-3, 2.31 ERA) starts against Milwaukee Brewers RHP Brandon Woodruff (3-0, 2.22 ERA) in a rematch of last year's NL Division Series. The Guardians remain on the road Friday, when RHP Tanner Bibee (7-9, 4.51 ERA) takes the mound against Chicago White Sox RHP Aaron Civale (3-6, 3.99 ERA).

Gavin Williams nearly records no-hitter as Guardians put away Mets

August 6 - Gavin Williams was two outs away from the Cleveland Guardians' first no-hitter in 44 years as the visitors took down the New York Mets 4-1 to complete the sweep on Wednesday afternoon. After striking out Francisco Lindor to open the bottom of the ninth inning, Williams' no-hit bid was spoiled when Juan Soto belted a solo home run to dead center. Williams (7-4) struck out six and walked four before he was removed after throwing 126 pitches over 8 2/3 innings. Hunter Gaddis recorded the final out for his second save of the season. Williams was attempting to become the first Cleveland player to throw a no-hitter since Len Barker tossed a perfect game against the Toronto Blue Jays on May 15, 1981, a span of 6,987 games. Williams was at 75 pitches through five innings, 89 through six, 97 through seven and 111 through eight. His season high was 109 pitches on May 26 against the Los Angeles Dodgers. David Fry and Angel Martinez each homered for the Guardians, who have won seven of eight. New York left-hander David Peterson (7-5) allowed four runs and five hits in six innings. He struck out seven and walked two in his first loss since June 27. The Mets have lost four in a row and eight of nine to fall out of first place in the National League East. Peterson sped through an eight-pitch first inning, but Fry jumped on a 1-2 fastball to lead off the second and homered deep over the fence in left-center field for a 1-0 lead. Steven Kwan singled up the middle on an 0-2 pitch to start the third for the Guardians. Martinez then turned on a slider and lined it over the fence in left for a two-run homer, snapping an 0-for-19 skid and giving Cleveland a 3-0 advantage. Carlos Santana walked with two outs in the sixth for Cleveland, and Gabriel Arias tripled into the right-center field gap to score Santana for a 4-0 lead. Williams knocked down a line drive back to the mound by Lindor in the first and then threw him out. He then caught a soft line drive back to him from Pete Alonso to end the inning. Williams walked Brandon Nimmo on seven pitches to lead off the second. While a wild pitch over the head of Mark Vientos moved Nimmo to second, the Mets stranded runners on the corners. Cleveland right fielder C.J. Kayfus made a diving catch off the bat of Vientos with one out in the seventh to keep the no-hitter intact. --Field Level Media

Guardians' Gavin Williams falls just short of no-hitting the Mets, as New York's malaise continues

NEW YORK — Cleveland Guardians starter Gavin Williams lost his no-hit bid against the New York Mets when Juan Soto hit a solo home run with one out in the ninth inning on Wednesday afternoon. The Guardians would win the game 4-1. Williams stayed in the game for two more batters, leaving one out shy of a complete game, as a two-out walk to Brandon Nimmo ended Williams' outing. He threw 126 pitches. Reliever Hunter Gaddis recorded the final out in the Guardians' win. Cleveland hasn't completed a no-hitter in 44 years, the longest active drought in MLB. Advertisement Soto's home run was the Mets' first hit since the fourth inning of Tuesday night's game. Williams befuddled the Mets using a mix of five pitches. He relied on his upper-90s fastball and curveball to limit the Mets to just four hard-hit balls. Before Soto's home run, there were two instances where the Mets appeared closest to recording a hit. Francisco Lindor led off the bottom of the first inning with a hard-hit comebacker carrying an exit velocity of 107.2 mph that knocked Williams' glove off. But the pitcher never lost composure, picked up the ball and made the throw to first base for an out. In the seventh inning, Mark Vientos hit a line drive to right field, but C.J. Kayfus made a diving catch. The last pitcher to throw a no-hitter against the Mets was Max Scherzer, who accomplished the feat with the Washington Nationals on Oct. 3, 2015. The Mets have lost four in a row and eight of their last 10 games. They are 2 1/2 games behind the Philadelphia Phillies in the NL East and have a 2 1/2 game lead over the Cincinnati Reds for the third wild-card spot. Since the All-Star break, the Mets have the second-lowest team OPS in baseball (.655) and are hitting just .222 as a team. Cleveland has won three straight games and are within a game of the final wild-card spot in the American League. Spot the pattern.
